Vandegrift Davala translates her experiences directly and spontaneously. She records her vivid images the way James Joyce recorded physical characteristics in his short stories; with accuracy and without extraneous details which may detract from the impact of the initial confrontation. Her style is indeed confrontational. Her style and method is to abbreviate; her codification is sophisticated and results from a long search for a personal vocabulary. Her work jumps at you abruptly, events are in the act of happening.

Mr. Russell was former director of the Arts Council Gallery, Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the Associate Director of The Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York. He is currently Director of the Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, MA.
